BERLIN (Hindi 2023)

Berlin is a movie to be congratulated on it’s clean and simplistic espionage plot without your larger than life action hero executing high end action scenes, high strung car chases or complicated plots of world dominion or lethal agendas regarding the destruction of mankind. The story manages to be relevant even without massive reveals, rather, the events build to an implicit conclusion that lurks around since the very beginning. Berlin has interesting characters, played by a Stellar cast rather than a star studded cast. Berlin covers the self-serving agendas amongst agents who appear larger than life but are just as prone to human errors and the emergence of an unlikely agent without any backing and voice to be heard.

Deadpool and Wolverine

The sheer number of Easter Eggs, cross referencing between the different universes; especially between X-men, fox and Avengers to fit it all under one universe, innuendos and private jokes mixed together makes Deadpool and Wolverine a tough watch, where you need to be on your toes to keep up not only with the action but with the wordplay and references. It’s easy to Blink and miss here, making it perhaps quintessential for multiple watches of the multiverse to truly grasp the underlying idea behind every one-liner thrown around.

Hi Nanna !

Hi Nanna, is a love story that takes us to scenic Connoor, the heart of Mumbai and to the Goan beaches. Though not superlative, it is a good balance between plot, acting and romance. There are some plot twists that were genuinely unexpected (for me) and which propels the story in a new direction.

Kalki 2898

There are various western elements to the film, from Shambala modeled after Star War’s Jedi (the attire and Mariam’s weapon) to Bhairav’s much talked about smooth Vahan (read Transformers),  Bhairav’s clones attacking Ashwattha (read Naruto’s Kage Bunshin), the concept of an elite complex where everyone from the underground wants to earn enough points to be able to enter (read Matt Damon starrer Elysium) and the underground which pretty much looks like a dystopian world depicted in every other hollywood movie out there. Add Indian mythology into the mix, and voila ! We have an eclectic mix promoting unity in diversity…. It’s interesting to note, that a lot of the extras hired look to be from diverse ethnicities and there is usage of  english words like complex, fertile and supreme used in the hindi version. This looks prominent enough to be deliberate. Deepika being artificially impregnated, symbolises the concept of the Virgin Mary or Virgin birth, hence, The Universal birth. She goes through the Agnipareeksha, not to prove her purity but to persevere in her attempts at protecting her child. The movie is supposed to be a part of The Kalki Cinematic Universe (…umm Marvel Cinematic Universe, anyone ?)I wonder if Nag Ashwin is looking to make a point here?
